In 2013, Shoshan extended his exploration of frontiers to the French Atlantic Coast, where he photographed abandoned bunkers from World War II. Emblems now of a whole region, their ruined outlines stand out in stark contrast to the pure lines of the landscape. The passing of time and the ravages it leaves are reflected in the artist’s chosen medium — 35 mm film, about 25 years out of date — and the resulting games of grain and colour. To these slides, the artist added filmed portraits of former resistance members and survivors of the war. Stoic, almost imperturbable, those who risked their lives at one time in history now find themselves again, because of age, at the frontier between life and death. Like the dilapidated buildings, their faces, marked by time, represent dreams of a glorious future that are about to melt into the landscape. But while victory may dissolve with entropy, the spirit of resistance remains.
